The First Trace: An Introduction to Limintrace Fieldwork

Before you call it a spirit, document the trace.

The First Trace introduces Limintrace, a method developed by Liadán Hallow for observing and documenting anomalous experience.
You will learn how to record what you noticed, examine the circumstances surrounding it and keep observation separate from interpretation.

The workshop follows four stages:

• Observation: What happened? Record what was directly seen, heard, felt, measured or otherwise noticed.

• Variables: What else was present? Note the people, place, conditions, equipment and expectations surrounding the experience.

• Interpretation: What might explain it? Consider possible explanations while keeping them separate from the original observation.

• Claim: What can honestly be said? Identify what the record supports and what remains uncertain.

Through a worked case example and guided practice, you will learn to use the Limintrace Field Note. By the end of the workshop, you will have completed a Field Note and be able to use the method in your own fieldwork.

Limintrace can be used in paranormal investigation, folklore and place-based fieldwork, or to document an anomalous experience of your own.

The claim should never outrun the trace.
